Roald Amundsen’s expedition to the South Pole in 1911.

“The West Coast or death.” With these words, Fridtjof Nansen set off to cross the Greenland in 1888. “The West Coast or the emergency beacon” is what Stein P Aasheim said when he and his comrades followed in Nansen’s footsteps 100 years later, equipped with replicas of the gear used by the old heroes.

The expedition went from the Norwegian Antarctic Station Troll, through the vast Antarctic inland, places no human had been before, to the South Pole. Jan-Gunnar led the expedition.

The last weekend of August 2010 we traversed a glacier, Øksfjordjøkelen, in Finnmark. It was a marvelous experience.
